Mouse Wheel Not Working?

Rotation and a wheel press are separate signals. Test the part that actually fails.

Identify rotation versus middle-click

Pressing the wheel is the middle button; rotating it produces scroll events. A mouse can register one while the other fails. Use the button test for wheel presses and the scroll test for rotation rather than treating them as one signal.

If the wheel feels physically blocked

Disconnect the mouse and look for exterior debris. Gently remove loose dust according to the maker’s instructions. Do not force a jammed wheel, pour in cleaner or open the case without model-specific guidance. A browser cannot measure mechanical resistance.

If rotation feels normal but input is irregular

Use separate steady up/down phases. Opposite events or intermittent reports can come from settings, accidental reversals, software or a physical encoder issue. Check natural-scrolling settings and compare another application and computer.

If middle-click alone fails

Check whether your mouse profile assigns the wheel press to another action. Then compare complete middle-button press/release cycles. A repeatable missing wheel-press signal on another computer points to a narrower investigation than replacing the entire mouse based on a single scroll test.

A few useful answers

Frequently asked questions

Can middle-click fail while scrolling still works?

Yes. Pressing and rotating the wheel provide separate input signals. Check the wheel press in the button tester and rotation in the scroll tester.

What can cause irregular wheel direction?

Settings, user reversals, software and a physical encoder problem can all change the observed direction. Compare a steady physical-wheel test on another computer before selecting a cause.

Should I force a stuck mouse wheel?

No. Disconnect it and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning or service instructions. Mechanical resistance cannot be safely diagnosed through a browser test.
